What is Torrens Title?

Torrens tittle was designed by Robert Richard Torrens when he was appointed Registrar of the state of South Australia in 1850. It was based upon the simple system used for insuring shipping by Lloyds of London.

In short a Torrens tittle is a single document that is guaranteed by the state government. This is referred to as the Certificate of Title (CT). The CT also records information such as;

  • Easements
  • Covenants
  • Mortgages
  • Resumptions
  • Caveats
  • Subsequent changes in ownership.
